Chris Wallace, the veteran anchor of Fox News Sunday who has repeatedly clashed with Donald Trump over the last year and is now stepping down from the show, did it again Monday morning.

After a Trump-like tirade against the press during his presidential campaign (see also here), Wallace had been lukewarm in his support for the president-elect. In fact, in an October interview, he said that Trump “needs help” following an interview in which he told Wallace that he didn’t want to return to Fox News to do a “thank you to CNN” because he was tired of being raked over the coals by the network.

But Wallace was back in full “Fox News Sunday” form on Monday morning, after having an incredibly contentious exchange with Trump on the campaign trail. During a lengthy interview with Melania Trump — whom Wallace took aside on the side after questioning her about Trump’s attitude toward women — the GOP candidate-turned-president-elect said, “I think that you should allow me to run the country.” Trump added that, with a “little help,” he can do a better job than Clinton.

As a result, Wallace is reportedly leaving the show, as his departure was announced Wednesday.

An unnamed source with knowledge of the announcement told the Hollywood Reporter, “Chris is leaving because, as he said, his ship has come in. He doesn’t want to fight with the new administration.”

Wallace was an early critic of Trump’s candidacy. He became a fixture of the cable news landscape as a TV newsman and reporter who, like Chris Cuomo, had been critical of Trump.
